Billy Tea Safaris Explores the amazing Chillagoe Caves, Granite Gorge and other highlights of Tropical North Queensland on this full-day tour from Cairns.

Firstly your day begins with a pick up by your friendly accredited guide in a custom-built air-conditioned 4WD vehicle. After introductions and getting to know your fellow passengers for the day, we’ll ascend the McAllister Ranges. Looking for many different species of bush birds, including emus, wedge-tail eagles, squatter pigeons, kangaroos and frilled neck lizards. Along the way to your first stop at Skybury Coffee Plantation in Mareeba for morning tea.

Travel out to Chillagoe

Travel out to Chillagoe while listening to the informative commentary by your guide who will share information about the region’s wildlife, history, and aboriginal culture.

Explore the Chillagoe-Mungaga Caves National Park with an expert local guide, travel through historic mining towns and small outback communities. See the Chillagoe Smelter Ruins, visit Balancing Rock for an amazing photo opportunity, see and learn about aboriginal rock art and visit Granite Gorge to see the wallabies. You’ll also be treated to lunch at a 100-year-old Aussie Outback pub.

YOUR 4WD EXPERIENCE THROUGH THE AUSSIE OUTBACK FROM CAIRNS!

Courtesy pick up and drop off (note Port Douglas is an additional cost). Board the custom-built 4WD vehicle and travel spotting wallabies, emus, and other wildlife.

And then along the agricultural paddocks of this fertile area, where you will have a chance to see, Paw Paw, Lychee, Longen, Mangoes, just to name a few. Eventually crossing over the Great Divide and into the Western watershed. We are now in the Australian Outback.

Day 1 Perth to Fitzgerald River National Park

Our adventure begins as we travel east from Perth over the Darling Ranges with our first coffee break in the historic township of York, WA’s oldest inland town. A bit more driving and you’ll be eating lunch in the shadow of Wave Rock. By late afternoon, we’ll have arrived in Fitzgerald River National Park, an internationally recognised world biosphere! There’ll be time for an afternoon beach stroll before pitching camp for the night.
Today we clock up a few kilometres and travel around 9 hours with stops along the way. Walking time is about an hour. Tonight we swag camp at Fitzgerald River National Park which has toilet but no shower facilities. Lunch and dinner are provided.

Day 2 Fitzgerald River NP to Esperance and Cape Le Grand

Begin the morning with a brisk hike up East Mt Baron, one of the three quartzite peaks that make up the Barren Range. Legs stretched, we’ll take the coastal route into Esperance for a coffee break and mosey around.
Then get ready for some of Australia’s most spectacular scenery with this part of WA having no less than 9 National Parks, and we camp at the most spectacular of all, Cape Le Grand National Park. The ocean here is practically transparent, the local eastern grey ‚Äòroos are regularly sunbaking on the beach and the sand at Lucky Bay has twice been judged Australia’s whitest.

Enjoy a free afternoon here and how you spend it is wholly up to you. Set out on a coastal bushwalk, splash about in the sea, fiddle around with your camera aperture or just kick back with your new buds along the beach.

Today we travel 3 hours with stops along the way. Walking time is about 3 hours and you’ll be swag camping with toilet and shower facilities at Cape Le Grand. All meals are provided.

Day 3 Cape Le Grand National Park & Stirling Ranges

The views from the top of Frenchman’s Peak are pretty impressive, so this morning the top of Frenchman’s Peak is where we go. Following the walk, it’s back in the bus for the drive into the Stirling Ranges, with a lunch stop near Esperance along the way. Depending on the time of the year in spring we might seek out the beautiful wildflowers or in the heat of summer the flowing rivers and waterfalls.
Today driving time is about 6 hours and walking time is about 4.5 hours. Tonight we swag camp at a private camp ground in the Stirling Ranges with shower and toilet facilities. All meals are provided.

Day 4 South West coastlines and forests

Cruise along WA’s glorious stretch of coastline, seeing how years of natural erosion have crafted incredible rock sculptures and granite bluffs – the Natural Bridge and The Gap are two of our favourites. Heading inland, we then get to the Valley of the Giants, a giant forest of towering Red Tingle trees, many of which are over 400 years old. Walk amongst these tall tingle trees on the ancient empire walk. Climb the Diamond tree, towering 50 metres above the ground, a native karri tree once used as a fire lookout. It is 1 of 3 wooden top towers in this area and in the world. The day’s last lot of driving brings us to Quinninup camp.
Today we drive about 4 hours and walk about 1.5 hours. Tonight we stay in Quinninup Caravan Park which has shower and toilet facilities and all meals are provided.

Day 5 Quinninup to Margaret River

Today it’s time to eat, drink and be merry, tasting the delicious local fare of Margaret River. Boutique breweries, chocolate, cheese and even a fudge factory, today you will have time to browse and explore.
Today there is a 4 hour drive and all meals are included.

Day 6 Margaret River to Perth

On the last day of the tour you will visit Koomal Dreaming where you will have the opportunity to taste native foods, discover bush medicine and experience traditional fire lighting with local indigenous people. Hear stories of the Dreaming spirits and go deep down into the mesmerising Ngilgi Cave for a uniquely memorable didgeridoo cave experience. Then we hit the road and head back to sunny Perth!
Today we drive approx. 3 hours and please make sure you have booked your Perth accommodation prior to departure. You’ll get your breakfast and lunch and although there are no formal activities planned it is usual for the group to get together and reflect on the journey together over a few drinks and a meal (at own expense)

FULL ITINERARY

Day 1 – Perth to Fitzgerald River National Park

The adventure begins traveling east from Perth over the Darling Ranges with the first coffee break in the historic township of York, WA’s oldest inland town. A bit more driving and you’ll be eating lunch in the shadow of Wave Rock. By late afternoon, arrive in Fitzgerald River National Park, an internationally recognized World Biosphere. Today travel around 600 km (10 hours) with plenty of stops along the way and camp at Fitzgerald River National Park which has toilet and shower facilities.

Day 2 – Fitzgerald River to Cape Le Grand National Park

Begin the morning with a brisk hike up East Mt Baron for breathtaking views. Legs stretched, take the coastal route into Esperance for a coffee and mosey around. Then get ready for some of Australia’s most impressive coastal scenery. Set up camp in the spectacular Cape Le Grand National Park, famous for its sunbathing kangaroos. Enjoy a free afternoon here to set out on a hike, get your kangaroo selfie, or just kick back with your new friends on the beach.

Today travel about 250km (2.5 hours) and camp at Cape Le Grand which has toilet and shower facilities.

Day 3 – Cape Le Grand to The Nullarbor

Take an epic early morning hike up Frenchman Peak. Mind blown, jump back on the bus and enjoy a stunning coastal drive, stopping at some of the region’s best beaches. Grab a bite in the outback town of Norseman, and then hit the Eyre Highway to start the journey eastbound.

Tonight, be left speechless by the show of constellations and shooting stars as you bush camp (no facilities) on the Nullarbor. Today’s driving time is about 5 hours.

Day 4 – The Nullarbor & Koonalda Homestead

Driving’s the name of the game today (we’ve got 500 kilometers of the world’s longest stretch of straight road to cover). Make a stop at Eucla, an old telegraph township now mostly buried beneath dunes. Call in for a night’s camping at Koonalda Homestead. This unique campsite was originally a sheep shearing station and fuel and rest stop for people traveling along the Nullarbor in the 1950s. The site was abandoned and is now somewhat of a graveyard for cars left broken down on the Nullarbor. A photographer’s dream and a unique part of Australian history!

Travel time today is about 6 hours and once again be prepared to be bedazzled by the wonders of the southern skies. Koonalda Homestead provides toilets but no showers.

Day 5 – Great Australian Bight & Coodlie Park

Stops for today include the famous Camels/Kangaroos/Wombats Crossing road sign and the Bunda Cliffs, where Australia drops dramatically into the Southern Ocean. Stretching for approximately 200 kilometers along the Great Australian Bight, this is the world’s longest continuous line of sea cliffs and an epic coastal lookout.

Cross the Dingo Fence – at 5,614 kilometers, it is the world’s longest fence and enters the Yalata Aboriginal lands. In the afternoon visit the Ceduna Arts and Cultural Centre to hear about the styles and meanings of Indigenous artwork. After stocking up on supplies in Streaky Bay, test out your sand boarding skills in some massive dunes. Come late afternoon, arrive at our home base, Coodlie Park Farm Retreat to enjoy a BBQ feast and swap stories with travelers from our other tour around the campfire.

Today travel 600km (8 hours). Sleep in a swag hut and use a unique eco bucket shower.

Day 6 – Baird Bay & Mikkira Station

It’s time for a tour highlight, swimming with the puppy dogs of the sea – Australian sea lions and majestic dolphins on a 3-hour cruise in the sheltered waters of Baird Bay. This optional experience is an outsourced adventure operated by Baird Bay Eco Tours. At only $180, it is an experience to treasure forever.

Those who choose to stay on land will travel to Point Labatt Conservation Park, the only place on the mainland where you can see Australian seal pups playing and resting on the beach.

After lunch, travel to Elliston for a short coastal drive, then onto Mikkira Station to set up camp for two nights. Home to 170 wild koalas, here you will have the wonderful opportunity to see koalas up close and personal and sleep under koala-filled gum trees.

Travel 400kms today (4.5 hours) and Mikkira has shower and toilet facilities.

Day 7 – Port Lincoln & Mikkira Station

Today you are offered two very different itineraries. Those who love aquatic wildlife can choose the full day optional experience of coming face-to-face with the majestic, Great White Shark. From staying dry in a revolutionary glass viewing aqua sub, to the more extreme option of entering the cage. Prices range from $350 to $564 depending on your choice from two operators. Please see ‘Optional Extras’ for more information.

Those staying on dry land will be exploring the highlights of Port Lincoln, and it’s surrounding. From the rugged Whalers Way to the white sandy beaches of Coffin Bay National Park. You will also have some free time in ‘Australia’s Seafood Capital’ to grab a coffee or chill on the foreshore. After picking up people returning from the shark tour, it’s back to the cute koalas at Mikkira Station.

Drive time today is about 2.5 hours unless you are doing the sharks experience in which case it is only 1 hour.

*Day 8 – Port Lincoln to Flinders Ranges *

Surfing is a way of life in Australia, so today, pull on a wetsuit for a two-hour learn-to-surf lesson in the turquoise and calm water of Fisheries Bay. Those not wanting to surf will be able to relax, swim, or explore.

Onwards to the ancient Southern Flinders Ranges to explore the pristine Warren Gorge. Also, a great place to spot rare yellow-footed rock wallabies, which are bouncing back from near-extinction.

Today travel approximately 400 km (4 hours) and bush camp at Warren Gorge, which has a toilet but no shower facilities.

Day 9 – Flinders Ranges to Adelaide

Embark on the last hike of the tour at Dutchmans Stern which features incredible views over the Southern Flinders Ranges. South Australia is well known for its world-class wine, and the last stop of the tour will be for lunch and wine tasting in the picturesque Clare Valley. Cheers to that.

Drive time today is about 5 hours, and this overland adventure ends on arrival into Adelaide. Although there are no formal activities planned, it is usual for the group to get together and reflect on the adventure over a few drinks and meal (at own expense).

OPTIONAL EXPERIENCES

There are two optional extra activities on this tour that we leave up to you to decide if you would like to do. These are both popular activities, so we highly recommend securing your place at the time of booking.

Please keep in mind; These tours are operated by third parties and separate to Nullarbor Traveller. Therefore, the terms and conditions of each of these companies apply. Weather can play an essential part in the operations of these tours, and occasionally a tour may be cancelled which is beyond our control.

Swim with sea lions and dolphins ($180pp)

The interaction that you will have with the sea lions and dolphins at the beautiful and sheltered Baird Bay on the Eyre Peninsula will leave you breathless. Board the 14-seater boat for a short ride to the first stop, to swim with sea lions. This takes place in approximately two metres of water and is a natural experience with the sea lions coming into the sheltered lagoon to interact with us.

After this, head further out into the bay to swim with the majestic bottlenose dolphins. This happens in four metres of water within the sheltered bay. The tour is 3-4 hours, and a wetsuit and snorkel equipment is included.

Great White Shark Experiences in Port Lincoln

Adventure Bay Charters From $389pp – $564pp

This is Australia’s first Advanced Eco-certified White Shark Tour. Sustainable and responsible, Adventure Bay Charters use rock music to attract the sharks, which also makes for a great vibe on the boat for your tour. They also have the only Aqua Sub, a dry glass viewing platform with 360-degree views of the Great Whites in their natural habitat. This allows you to come face to face with the sharks while staying dry! If you are feeling brave, you can upgrade on the day to have the ultimate thrill of plunging into the Southern Ocean with the sharks, from within the safety of the cage.

This full-day tour to the Neptune Islands departs at 6.30 am and returns at 6.30 pm. It includes all equipment, breakfast, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. You also receive a selection of free images which they will email to you within a couple of days.

  • Cage Dive – $175pp (paid onboard)
  • $39 ‘Department of Environment Fee’ is payable on the day regardless of which option you choose (paid at reception)

Meals: Please advise of any special dietary requirements at the time of booking. We offer plenty of variety and do our best to provide fresh products. Snacks, soft drinks and alcohol are not included.

Camping: Our tours are camping adventures, and participation and involvement are required from our passengers. Swags: When camping, we use single swags. Swags are ‘Aussie Bed Rolls’ made from sturdy canvas with a mattress built into the swag. Passengers need to provide a sleeping bag and pillow to insert into the swag.

Day 1 Flinders Ranges National Park

It’s an early start today as we set out from the City of Churches across the Nullarbor. Headed north, we’ll stop in at Clare for a quick coffee before continuing on to the rugged gorges and Red Gums of the Flinders Ranges. Along the way there’ll be the opportunity for a bit of a leg stretch on a stroll down Alligator Gorge (no crocs here, though keep an eye out for snakes), then it’s on to Quorn, home of the PichiRichi Railway, for lunch. You’ll be spending tonight in Warren Gorge, camped out under the stars of the Southern Cross.

As the sun is setting and while your evening meal is being prepared, you will have the opportunity to explore the beautiful Warren gorge in the Flinders Ranges. It is here that you will get the opportunity to see a Yellow-Footed rock wallaby, almost driven to extinction by introduced ‚Feral‚animals, at Warren Gorge they are beginning to ‚Bounce Back!‚

Today we drive approx. 400 km (4 hours) in total with stops along the way. We’ll be bush camping (no facilities) and your lunch and dinner are included.

Day 2 Coodlie Park & the Eyre Peninsula

The Eyre Peninsular is one of those great many secrets people are only just discovering and once they do they are blown away! Keep your cameras at the ready for the Big Galah, an eight-metre-high fibreglass structure overlooking the gift shop in the tiny town of Kimba. After a quick pit stop for lunch, it’s back on the road to Venus Bay, Talia Caves and the Lake Newland sand dunes (where adrenaline junkies can test out their sand boarding skills). In the afternoon we’ll pull in to Coodlie Park for a night’s stay on a working farm which is also our home base!

Tonight you will share a meal and stories with travellers from our other tours sleep in our super cool swag huts and shower facilities are available.Today we drive approx 450km (5 hours) in total with stops along the way and all meals are included.

Day 3 Baird Bay & Fowlers Bay

Just up the road from Coodlie Park lies Baird Bay, an environment famed for its watery wildlife. This morning you’ll get the option to swim, snorkel and splash about with playful sea lions and dolphins on a 3-hour cruise. This outsourced adventure done by Baird Bay eco tours is an optional experience and at only $160 will be an experience you will treasure forever. Following a picnic lunch on the beach, we’ll continue driving along the coast to our secluded camping spot in Fowlers Bay.

Today we drive approx 5 hours in total with stops along the way and camp at Fowlers Bay campground which has shower facilities. All meals included.

Day 4 The Great Australian Bight

Days don’t get much more Australian than this one. Not only do we cross the 5,320-kilometre-long dingo fence this morning; we also take a snap or two at the famous wombat, emu, camel road sign on the Nullarbor and stop off at Bunda Cliffs to see where Australia, quite literally, drops into the ocean. Come arvo we cross the border into WA, where tonight’s free entertainment is provided courtesy of the celestial sphere.

Today’s distance is approx. 7 hours, with break stops. Tonight we bush camp (no facilities) under the Southern skies on the Nullarbor and all your meals are provided.

Day 5 Esperance & Cape Le Grand National Park

With their planetary sounding names and strewn about space junk, the small towns of Balladonia and Norseman have a slightly intergalactic atmosphere about them. Balladonia shot to worldwide fame in 1979 when the Skylab space station returned to earth here rather abruptly. After lunch we continue the drive to Esperance, which may seem like a bustling metropolis after five days in the outback.

Today we drive approx 7 hours, with stops along the way and we set up camp in spectacular Cape Le Grand National Park where you also have showers facilities. All meals included.

Day 6 Cape Le Grand National Park

Crystal clear waters, squeaky white sand, expansive granite bluffs… and sunbathing kangaroos? How you spend your day here is wholly up to you: set out on a coastal bush walk, splash about in the sea, fiddle around with your camera aperture or just kick back with your new buds along the beach.
We will take a hike to Frenchman’s Peak, where beautiful vistas span right across Cape Le Grand and the Recherche Archipelago. Locals reckon Frenchman’s Peak was named after the shape of French naval hat, but we’re not so sure.
We drive approx 10 minutes today, and walks will vary from 2-4 hours. You will have shower facilities and all meals included.

Day 7 Cape Le Grand National Park & Stirling Ranges

Take a morning stroll down to the beach and spot some kangaroo’s then settle in for the onwards drive to our Stirling Ranges campsite.
We drive for about 4 hours today, and walk for two hours. We camp in a private campground in the Stirling Ranges where you have shower and toilet facilities and even limited phone charging! All meals included.

Day 8 Stirling Ranges to Quinninup

Today’s a day for keeping cameras close and clicking fingers at the ready. Travelling along Western Australia’s answer to Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, you’ll be treated to superb views of sun-bleached boulders, turquoise seas and dramatic red-rock cliffs shaped by eons of crashing waves and rolling tides. From the coast to the forest, we’ll veer off into the Valley of the Giants for a stroll through the ancient empire walk.
It is just over 5 hours from Mt Trio to Quinninup, with stops along the way. Tonight we swag camp at a caravan park with shower and toilet facilities and all meals are provided.

Day 9 Quinninup to Margaret River

Today it’s time to eat, drink and be merry, tasting the delicious local fare of Margaret River. Boutique breweries, chocolate, cheese and even a fudge factory, today you will have time to browse and explore.
Today there is just a short two hour drive and all meals are included.

Day 10 Margaret River to Perth

On the last day of the trip you’ll wake to the now-familiar warble of kookaburras and cockatoos before taking the coastal road to Perth. Check out the Ngilgi caves and get the lowdown on this amazing underground world, then gain a totally different insight into local culture during a meet-up with some of the people indigenous to the area. A final stint on the road will bring us into Perth.

Today we drive approx. 5 hours and please make sure you have booked your Perth accommodation prior to departure. You’ll get your breakfast and lunch and although there are no formal activities planned it is usual for the group to get together and reflect on the big journey together over a few drinks and meal (at own expense).

Optional Experiences
There is one optional experience on this tour.

Swim with sea lions and dolphins ($160 p.p. guaranteed)

[Highly recommended optional experience (!)]

This is an amazing experience – you may have swum with dolphins at other places around the world but the interaction that you will have with the sea lions and dolphins at Bairds Bay will leave you breathless. Baird bay is a very sheltered bay on the Eyre Peninsula and passengers aboard the boat for a short ride to our first stop, which is to swim with sea lions. This takes place in approximately 2 metres of water. It is a natural experience and the sea lions come into the sheltered lagoon to interact with us. After this, we head further out into the bay to swim with the dolphins. This happens in four metres of water but is still within the sheltered bay. The tour is 3-4 hours, wetsuit and snorkel equipment is provided at no additional cost.

As this activity is outsourced, only limited spaces are available. By confirming and saying your intentions now, we can guarantee your position on the tour. Pay the operator direct $160 on the day of activity

The operators of this tour operate independent to Nullarbor Traveller.
Weather can play an important part in the operation of the tours and the operators make their own risk assessment and decision about the operation of the tour each day.Any money collected is refunded if the tour does not operate.
