There are estimated to be around 1500 dolphins in the greater Byron Bay area, stretching from Brunswick Heads in the north to Ballina in the south. Byron Bay and its immediate waters are an important habitat for over 300 dolphins. These are called resident dolphins and will live in this area their entire lives. The species most commonly seen on our tours include inshore and offshore bottle nose dolphins, along with some Indo Pacific humpback dolphins and common dolphins.
We see dolphins on 90% of our tours and if you don’t see them you can come again another time for free!
Kayak with the whales
May to November is the season to get up close and personal with whales as they migrate past the most easterly point of the Australian mainland Byron Bay.
Cape Byron Kayaks have been operating sea kayak tours for the past 17 years and every year the anticipation of Whale Season is almost too much to bear as there is no other experience quite as unique and exhilarating as sea kayaking alongside a whale.
During their northern migration, most whales come within 3 km of the NSW coast. During the southern migration Humpback whales bring their calves into the calm waters surrounding Cape Byron to rest and feed. The calves are very inquisitive and playful, they often approach our sea kayak tours with the mother at their side passing just meters from our kayaks. Whale Watching Byron Bay has been operating since 2002 making us Byron Bay’s most experienced whale watching tour operator. Over the years we have developed a tour that will provide you with a safe, informative and rewarding experience.
Whale Watching Byron Bay conduct daily whale watching tours between June and October. Our trips are small and personalised with a maximum of 12 customers per tour.
The migration route of the Australian east coast Humpback whale brings them in such close proximity to Byron Bay’s Cape Byron it is likely you will encounter several whales during your tour. This also allows us the quickest access to the waters used by migrating humpback whales. Therefore there are no long boat rides to and from whale watching sites and your whale watching adventure begins immediately.
The unique geography of Byron Bay’s Cape Byron allows us to pin point each whale’s location, therefore Whale Watching Byron Bay’s tours often encounter whales within minutes of departing Byron Bay.
Our whale watching guides will impart interesting facts about the migrating whales as well as Cape Byron Marine Park’s many other sea creatures including dolphins, sea turtles and many different species of sea bird. Each of Whale Watching Byron Bay’s vessels is equipped with a hydrophone so you can listen to the Humpback whales amazing whale song.

]]>Day one you will be spending reviewing important theory concepts and training you in essential scuba skills in the on-site training pool. The following days you will gain experience diving in the ocean at one of Australia’s top 10 diving sites, Julian Rocks!
Disclaimer: Please note that for all courses you will require a dive medical if you are under 15 years of age or aged 45 years and over. You may also require a dive medical if you have a medical condition. Please contact us prior to booking to discuss if a medical will be required. All medicals must be completed prior to the first day of the course. For all courses, all participants must be able to swim and be comfortable in the ocean.
